“Only Jesus is Perfect!”?

This is a very common phrase that comes out of the mouths of Christians when you talk about living free from sin.

“Are you saying you’re perfect? Only Jesus is perfect!”

Is that true? Is it a sin to think you perfect? Many of you will say yes, because only Jesus is perfect. But I can only say no depending on what I’m looking at.

Judging by my own behavior, I am far from perfect. But that’s not the point of Christianity. Remember what Paul said? “I no longer live, Christ lives in me.” (Gal. 2:20) That means you’re no longer the star of the show, He is. You don’t wave at everyone and say, “HEY LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT MY SIN! LOOK AT MY WEAK FLESH!”

You exist to put everyone’s attention on Jesus, not you.

People have a hard time understanding this and will often say, “So you don’t sin any more?” My answer frustrates a lot of them: I quit paying attention to sin. It’s not about what I do or don’t do anymore. “*gasp* How can you say that!” I died, remember?

The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”Romans 6:10-11

Jesus is the focus. It doesn’t matter what I do, it matters what He did. And when I believe in what He did I will naturally begin to do likewise. I exist to point people to Him and His work, not me and mine.

Am I saying I’m not responsible for my actions? Not at all. I’m just saying that I don’t hold my actions against myself, I hold myself to the results of His actions and the truth of His word.

“For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” – Hebrews 10:14
